Final Reflection
Every single moment of my senior year has been a journey. The year started off great. I was back in person in school, back in a classroom with all my peers and teachers compared to the year before I was online at home. It was a big change. When we came back to school we were introduced to capstone. I've always heard about it when the other graduates did it and I also volunteered in one. Now it was my turn to begin mine. I was excited yet nervous because it felt like it was a really big task. But I was ready to begin.
I didn’t really know what I wanted to do for my capstone at the beginning of the year and I didn't start brainstorming til the beginning of October. When I started to think about what I wanted to do I thought about doing a fundraiser for kids with cancer. When I started doing my research I felt stuck because I didn't know how I would start such a big project. I looked at other options and I found out about the Roberto Clemente committee. It interested me and I decided to make it my capstone project.
When I started the Roberto Clemente project I wasn't alone. I did the project with my peers Samantha, Jhoanelly, Nairoby and Zaida and also the Roberto Clemente committee. We started off with meetings every morning in advisory with Mr. Mercado and every Wednesday at 6pm with the rest of the committee. We started planning out the event and where we were going to do it, how we were going to promote it and who we were going to invite.
Towards the end of November we had almost everything set. We knew where and when we were going to do it. We did the press release and also knew who we were going to invite. We all took turns leading the meetings each week. And during each meeting we made sure to make a goal to have completed by the next meeting. We also started working on the logos for our flyers and also for our merchandise (T-shirts, Pins, and mugs). In December, We were invited to the Maria C Sanchez awards. We all dressed up and went to the event. At the Maria C Sanchez event me and the girls were surprised and received a 500$ Scholarship from Jeffrey Dressler Law.
In February me and the girls went to 4 radio stations to sponsor our event and 2 Tv stations. They were such great experiences. At first I was really nervous and scared and throughout all the different radio stations I got more comfortable and spoke out more. I feel like those moments sponsoring our events made me grow and made me more extroverted. In March it was our event. We did it at the Yard Goats Stadium on March 6 ,2022. The event went great. A lot of people came out to support and we even met the Superintendent of Connecticut Leslie-Torres Rodriguez, The Mayor Luke Bronin, The Vice president of the teacher union Corey Moses, and the President of the teacher union Carol Gale. And also me and the girls got surprised again by the owner of the yard goats Josh Solomon with another 500$ scholarship.
This project made me grow a lot as a person. I got more comfortable with public speaking, I learned a lot about everything that goes into making such a big event, and I also learned a lot more about Roberto Clemente than I already did. I met a lot of big people at this event and it was amazing. I loved this event because of all the people, the experiences and also the committee. They were awesome with me and the girls. I think it was a great decision for me to do the Roberto Clemente event as my project i loved it and i definitely recommend it to others who will be taking capstone next year.
